Exploring Algebra with a Function Machine

Looking for inspiring, new maths ideas for your classroom? Our CSER/Maths in Schools Project Officer, Celia Coffa showcases a fun and engaging activity from our free Maths in Schools online course for Year 3-6 students that combines storytelling with mathematics concepts. The goal is to help students understand pattern growth and basic algebraic functions. The activity is introduced through a picture book, "Two of Everything: A Chinese Folktale" retold by Lily Toy Hong. Students identify and predict patterns and learn to understand the concept of doubling and halving.
Upcoming Adelaide workshop: Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Histories & Cultures in the Australian Maths Curriculum

Join us this National Reconciliation Week at the South Australian Museum for a full day workshop: 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics'. This face to face event in Adelaide is a collaboration between the SA Museum and the University of Adelaide CSER Maths in Schools Professional Learning program. It will also include a tour of material culture in the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery inside the South Australian Museum with Bookabee Australia.

What is International Day of Mathematics? On March 14th, countries from around the world will celebrate International Day of Mathematics. Also known as World Pi Day, this is an exciting time to celebrate maths and the famous number π with the date written in numerals is 3/14 or as a decimal 3.14. The 2025 theme is Mathematics, Art, and Creativity. So how will you celebrate? Making, eating, playing….
