First Nations Culture in the Mathematics Curriculum

Culturally responsive education workshop

During National Reconciliation Week, Maths in Schools hosted an inspiring professional learning workshop at the South Australian Museum, bringing together educators to explore the connections between Mathematics and First Nations knowledge.

The event, titled "Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Histories & Cultures in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics," was led by Dr Caty Morris, from the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA) and the CSER STEM Team. Caty delivered a highly engaging and thought-provoking session focused on culturally responsive mathematics education.

The day began with an informative private tour of the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery, expertly guided by Bookabee Australia. This immersive experience set the tone for the workshop, engaging participants in a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and perspectives.

Throughout the day, Dr Morris led participants through a range of hands-on activities and practical strategies to help embed First Nations perspectives into mathematics teaching. Educators explored ways to connect mathematical concepts with Indigenous knowledge - highlighting its richness and relevance.

The workshop concluded with a collaborative planning session, giving educators the opportunity to reflect, share, and design culturally responsive learning experiences to take back to their classrooms. The day was both educational and empowering, reinforcing the importance of the role of educators in driving meaningful change for all learners.

Feedback from participants included:

  • Incredibly informative. Caty is so knowledgeable of both culture and education. Extremely worthwhile.
  • Informative with resources to help develop best practice in my work in the future.
  • Excellent workshop. Really enjoyed it. Insightful and enjoyable presenter.

With thanks to the support of the Australian Government Department of Education through the Maths in Schools: Teaching and Learning Resources to Support Mathematics initiative.
