Exploring Algebra with a Function Machine

Looking for inspiring, new maths ideas for your classroom? Our CSER/Maths in Schools Project Officer, Celia Coffa showcases a fun and engaging activity from our free Maths in Schools online course for Year 3-6 students that combines storytelling with mathematics concepts. The goal is to help students understand pattern growth and basic algebraic functions. The activity is introduced through a picture book, "Two of Everything: A Chinese Folktale" retold by Lily Toy Hong. Students identify and predict patterns and learn to understand the concept of doubling and halving.
Upcoming Adelaide workshop: Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Histories & Cultures in the Australian Maths Curriculum

Join us this National Reconciliation Week at the South Australian Museum for a full day workshop: 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics'. This face to face event in Adelaide is a collaboration between the SA Museum and the University of Adelaide CSER Maths in Schools Professional Learning program. It will also include a tour of material culture in the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery inside the South Australian Museum with Bookabee Australia.
CSER Team kicks off 2025 attending exciting events across Australia!

We have been fortunate to start off 2025 by attending and presenting at several state STEM and Maths events across Australia, including the Girls in Tech event at St Peter's Girls' School in SA, Questacon STEM Futures held at Port Augusta and Adelaide Zoo, the Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers (QAMT) and Science Teachers Association of Queensland (STAQ) Early Years and Primary Teachers conference and finally, the Southern Mallee Maths Conference in Swan Hill, Victoria.

Shining a light on learning: A real-world solar power investigation.

In all our Maths in Schools online courses we demonstrate a variety of teaching strategies or pedagogies. Maths investigations is a guided pedagogical approach that involves learning and applying maths through investigations and solving problems. This approach can tap into students' curiosity and allow new opportunities to transfer and apply their understanding of maths learning and concepts to real-world and authentic problems.
