Wrapping Up 2025 With Events and Conferences Around Australia

MAV 2025

Our Maths in Schools and CSER STEM PL team rounded off 2025 with a busy and inspiring few weeks attending and presenting at conferences and events across Australia. It has been a wonderful opportunity to connect with educators, share our free resources, and contribute to conversations shaping mathematics and digital technologies education. From Perth to Melbourne to Adelaide, our team were delighted to engage with enthusiastic delegates and showcase the ongoing work of the Maths in Schools and CSER projects.

The Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA) hosted the 2025 WA Annual Maths Conference at the Crown Convention Centre in Burswood from 19–21 November, marking a wonderful celebration of mathematics education across the state. Dr John West, our Maths in Schools WA Project Officer, represented the team and delivered a successful workshop called "Creating and Nurturing Mathematical Thinkers" to an engaged audience. A special congratulations to John, who was awarded life membership of MAWA during the event – a well-deserved recognition of his significant contributions to the mathematics education community.

On 28th November, our team attended the SA STEM Conference held at Flinders University. With the theme "STEM for a Changing World", the event brought together educators exploring the role of STEM in a rapidly evolving landscape. Associate Professor Nickolas Falkner delivered the keynote address titled "What do I mean when I talk about AI?", prompting rich discussions about the place of artificial intelligence in education. Dr Caty Morris, CSER Project Officer and ATSIMA Project Coordinator, presented a workshop titled "The 'M' in STEM: First Nations Rangers Caring for Country", which was warmly received by attendees. Susie Barber and Lyn Dyer represented our team on the CSER and Maths in Schools stand at the conference, engaging with a large number of delegates throughout a busy and inspiring day. The team shared lots of free resources from Maths in Schools, Mathematics Hub, our CSER Digital Technology offerings and the National Lending Library.

In Melbourne, our team were pleased to present at Digicon 2025 for Digital Learning and Teaching Victoria (DLTV). CSER Project Officer for Victoria, Celia Coffa, led an engaging teacher workshop called "Code, Chance, Create: Unlocking Maths & Digital Tech with micro:bit games" which explored the connections between Maths and Digital Technologies, sharing practical, classroom-ready activities. The session sparked lively discussion and highlighted the exciting overlap between the two learning areas.

To finish the year, the team attended the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV25) conference on 4th and 5th December. The Maths in Schools team collaborated with the Mathematics Hub team to share our free resources at the conference, connecting with a steady stream of educators across both days. Celia Coffa and Dr John West ran a well-attended workshop that brought the Maths in Schools project to life entitled "Unmasking the Maths: Exploring Mathematical Modelling Resources for Years 3-10." Whilst attending the MAV conference, we were delighted to meet our friend and colleague from ATSIMA, Professor Chris Matthews on the ATSIMA stand.

As we reflect on a full and rewarding end to 2025, our team looks forward to attending more events across Australia in 2026. If you are interested in participating in free Maths in Schools Professional Learning with a member of our national team, please register your interest via the Mathematics Hub: Maths in Schools Professional Learning page.
