CSER Research: 8 Principles for Inclusive STEM Education Launch
The Get into STEM: Diversity in STEM website has just launched the 8 Principles for Inclusive STEM Education, an evidence-based guide developed by researchers from the Computer Science Education Research (CSER) Group.
To develop this guide, CSER researchers, Jaclyn Steffan, Dr Rebecca Vivian, and Prof Edward Palmer, undertook a rigorous literature review to identify best practices in inclusive education for diverse learners and translated the research into a practical guide for educators.
This work builds upon Education Services Australia’s (ESA’s) ‘7 Principles for Inclusive Learning Environments’, expanding to include a broader scope of diversity groups beyond girls and women to also include:
- gender diverse people
- LGBTQIA+ people
- First Nations people
- culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people
- people with disability
- neurodivergent people
- people from regional and remote locations
- people in low socioeconomic areas.
This resulted in a freshly updated set of 8 Principles for Inclusive STEM Education and a newly updated guide with practical and evidence-based strategies grounded in the latest research, supporting educators and schools to create more inclusive STEM learning environments and classroom learning experiences.
Why does this matter?
The future of Australia's capability to drive innovation and solutions through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) depends on attracting diverse groups of students to consider a career in STEM. Perceptions of STEM careers and what it means to belong in STEM is known to develop from the first year of school. Unfortunately, many Australian students still lack confidence in STEM subjects as seen on the STEM Equity Monitor.
If you're a teacher, school leader, or educator who's ever wondered how to make your STEM classroom genuinely work for every student and how to inspire students in STEM, not just the ones who already feel like they belong, this guide is for you.
