CSER research to pilot the Get into STEM: Diversity in STEM Toolkit in schools

CSER will collaborate on a new research project with Education Services Australia (ESA) to pilot the updated Get into STEM: Diversity in STEM Toolkit resources in schools.

In 2025, CSER partnered with ESA to undertake a literature review and update of the original 7 Principles for inclusive learning environments for the Get into STEM: Diversity in STEM Toolkit (formerly the Girls in STEM Toolkit website). This work is being finalised with the newly updated Principles to be launched by ESA this year!

The updated Get into STEM: Diversity in STEM Toolkit project, delivered by ESA and funded through the Australian Government Department of Education, will extend its focus of the program beyond girls and young women to target a broader range of diverse and underrepresented cohorts across primary and secondary years to help them see a future for themselves in STEM education and careers. The toolkit includes curriculum-aligned resources for students, teachers, families and carers.

This new CSER research project will run throughout 2026-2027, led by Dr Rebecca Vivian, and investigate how teachers use the resources in schools, and determine the impact of the resources to improve under-represented students’ dispositions to STEM, engagement in STEM and consideration of STEM careers.

The research will focus on primary school teachers (especially Foundation to Year 4) and secondary school teachers (Year 7 to Year 10), with participating schools identifying specific outcomes and principles to address to meet their goals. Working with CSER, teachers in schools will upskill in the use of the new principles and resources, and work with the team to measure the impact on teachers and their students.
