First Nations Australian STEM solutions & immersive technologies

Webinar: 1 November 2023, 4pm ACDT

A meeting of two worlds - First Nations Australians have been using STEM for tens of thousands of years.

With thanks to funding from a Google Educator Grant, the CSER STEM Team and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA) are collaborating to deliver this workshop.

This session explores the Goompi Model developed by Prof Chris Matthews and introduces a lesson plan framework to bring to life a range of First Nations' innovations through a collaborative design process using virtual and augmented reality. Participants will explore spear thrower design, architecture and fishing traps and nets.

Participants will receive take away resources to use in the classroom.

Connecting culture with maths webinar series

CSER, along with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA), will present a 3-part webinar series on connecting culture with maths under the Maths in Schools project.

Through the webinar series, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the 3 key concepts of Culture, Country/Place and People in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.

The content we will be looking at through the webinar series supports the 3 online courses in the Maths in Schools professional learning project.

  • Webinar 1: 8 November 2023 - will consider the key concept of Culture and its connection with maths. We will explore the rich contexts of material culture, cultural expressions and instructive games & toys.
  • Webinar 2: 15 November 2023 - will consider the key concept of Country/Place and its connection with maths. We will explore the rich contexts of weather & seasons, caring for country/place, and navigation & mapping.
  • Webinar 3: 22 November 2023 - will consider the key concept of People and connection with maths. We will explore the rich contexts of knowledge systems, architecture, and Indigenous data sovereignty.

This initiative is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and is part of the Maths in Schools: Teaching and Learning Resources to Support Mathematics project.
