Maths in Schools out and about across SA!
Dr John West, a member of our CSER Maths in Schools team has been very busy in SA this week running fun and inspiring workshops for both metropolitan and regional teachers.
On Monday afternoon, teachers from across Adelaide and Gawler came to our campus for a 2-hour hands-on workshop with a focus on Explicit Teaching strategies and a range of practical and flexible activities that can be used across multiple year levels. The Maths in Schools Online courses were showcased together with the Mathematics Hub and in between these spotlights on resources, John took the group through a range of engaging maths activities using low and no cost materials!
It was a rowdy and happy room, with wonderful engagement from educators!
The next day John ran a series of workshops at a local Adelaide school followed by a road trip to Port Lincoln Secondary School later in the week to deliver professional learning to Eyre Peninsula based teachers. Educators from Port Lincoln High and Primary schools, Cummins Area School and Kirton Point School joined in for another hands on workshop full of ideas and inspiration. Through the day the group considered strategies for differentiating the maths classroom and the importance of positive dispositions as well as engaging in a range of explicit teaching strategies using the Concrete, Representational (Pictorial), Abstract model.
It was a successful week with some lovely feedback:
"Thank you for a fast paced, engaging and overall fabulous presentation! John was exceptional and read the room. I loved the snappy games and info we were given about the website. It was just really enjoyable and affirming that with minimal resources you can achieve great success in mathematics!"
"Very informative, good pace to the session. Lots of great ideas to take away. It was free!"
Thanks to all the wonderful educators that took part in the workshops, we look forward to working with you again!
