A Day of Culturally Responsive Mathematics at the SA Museum!

Culturally responsive education

Dr Caty Morris, from ATSIMA and the CSER STEM team delivered a second highly engaging culturally responsive mathematics workshop at the South Australian Museum which also included an insightful private tour of the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery by Dr Jared Thomas.

After the tour, Caty led educators through sample lesson plans and shared background materials and resources to assist with ways to connect mathematics with First Nations cultures and curriculum development. Rich discussions took place on integrating material culture and local contexts such as the Kaurna Seasons, followed by a collaborative planning session for educators to take valuable ideas back into schools.

Feedback from participants included:

"Informative, engaging and inspiring."

"Really helpful and eye-opening."

"Highlighted so many ways of integrating First Nations knowledge and culture into maths teaching"

"Provided an opportunity for teachers to embed cultural perspectives into school learning."

With thanks to the support of the Australian Government Department of Education through the Maths in Schools: Teaching and Learning Resources to Support Mathematics initiative.
