National Reconciliation Week 2024: Now more than ever!
It's National Reconciliation Week and this year's theme is 'Now More than Ever'. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Culturally responsive pedagogy is a way of teaching that harnesses the diverse cultural characteristics, experiences and perspectives of Australia’s First Nations students. It enables students to engage with their cultures in learning and in solving problems and can increase student engagement for all students.
Over the past few years the CSER STEM team has proudly collaborated with the team from the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA) and Jesse King (Aurora Foundation) on a range of resources and content to support teachers in the delivery of culturally responsive teaching, including:
- lesson plans in our Lending Library, for example: Robot Animal Tracker, First Nations Australian's fishing traps and nets in VR, First Nations Australian architecture and Virtually launching a Spear Thrower
- a range of culturally responsive pedagogical content and classroom ideas in our Maths and Digital Technologies MOOCs. Register for free via our Available MOOCs page.
- webinars on culturally responsive maths pedagogy, which can be viewed on demand from the Mathematics Hub webinar page
- various workshops including the upcoming South Australian Museum Culturally Responsive Maths event.
These initiatives have been supported by our funding partners, including the Australian Government Department of Education and Google Australia.
