Your Stories - St John the Baptist Catholic School
As the 2024 school year draws to a close, we have enjoyed hearing from many educators in schools around the country about how their students have engaged with our CSER Lending Library kits in their classrooms during Term 4.
St John the Baptist Catholic School in Plympton, South Australia borrowed one of our Lending Library Dash Kits this term. These interactive Dash robots have the ability to manoeuvre around the floor in all directions, sense objects, flash LED lights and even playback audio. They operate through a variety of apps that not only develop students' programming skills but also help build creativity, problem solving and critical thinking.
Class teacher at the school, Nat Weber, shared with us the great learning and fun that took place with her Year 4 students whilst using the Dash robots. Firstly, the students explored coding through the Blockly app by Make Wonder to learn to move their Dash robots. In the following sequence of lessons, the students learned to code their robots to move around 5 x 5 grid squares taped on the classroom floor to try and land on their opposite team's square - a little like the game of Battleships! This activity in the "Hide and Seek with Dash" lesson plan created by the CSER team is included with the Dash kit, along with many other lesson ideas. Nat shared with us that the students absolutely loved using Dash with lots of Maths, Computer Science and Technology in play during their lessons. She added, "The robots have also attracted a lot of attention from the other students in the school!"
Many thanks to Nat and the Year 4 students at St John the Baptist Catholic School for sharing their hands on learning with the Dash robots from the CSER Lending Library. We're glad you had fun learning with them!
